CHUCK'S JOURNEY

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation

Tuesday, October 29

Chuck visits the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, where bison are an important part of the community’s identity. There he meets Koda Tacan, who from a young age has been involved in efforts to reintroduce bison to the land.

It’s the end of summer, which means Chuck can experience a special time of year when the animal offers itself to the hunter. Since Koda helps raise bison, it’s an emotional event for him and for the community members, who see the animal as one of their own.

Chuck helps with the painstaking process of butchering the bison. Once the meat is ready to cook, community members gather to prepare their favourite bison dishes and enjoy a meal together around a teepee.
