Chuck travels to the community of Eastmain, in the Eeyou Istchee territory, nestled between the boreal forest and James Bay. He’s there to meet community member and bear-hunting expert Jamie Moses.
Bear hunting is somewhat of a controversial tradition in Indigenous communities, and Chuck is eager to hear what Jamie has to say.
The hunt is unsuccessful, but luckily, Jamie has bear meat and fat ready to cook back in the community. Jamie shows Chuck how to prepare a large piece of bear fat, a delicacy typically shared with community elders.
Jamie invites Chuck to a walking-out ceremony, an Eeyou tradition celebrating a baby’s first steps and first contact with the ground.
