Chuck and the First Peoples' Kitchen

CHUCK'S JOURNEY

Metepenagiag

Tuesday, October 8

Chuck is invited by Malcolm Ward to the Metepenagiag community in New Brunswick to learn how to hunt for pheasants—a bird species that had completely disappeared from this Mi’kmaq territory before being reintroduced over the last decade.

Chuck and Malcolm spend hours searching the woods for birds, with little success. But their efforts are far from wasted: Malcolm stumbles across a carved quartz point, an artifact from thousands of years ago.

Metepenagiag is known for its archaeological sites. To accurately identify and date their discovery, Chuck and Malcolm head to Metepenagiag Heritage Park to meet with archaeological technician Lisa Chevarie.

Malcolm and Chuck set up their kitchen by the water. River, fire, wild game and conversation—a recipe that’s held up for millennia.
