Chuck visits Kahnawà:ke to learn all about corn, an emblematic food in Kanien’kehá:ka culture. It’s harvest day, and people have gathered in the community garden to pick the corn and prepare a traditional soup.
Stephen McComber, the community’s guardian of ancestral seeds, shows Chuck the traditional way of planting corn. Alongside the community members, Chuck learns how to braid the husks and hang the cobs to dry. In the past, corn would be kept for seven years to feed the community in times of need.
Chuck attends a traditional corn husk doll-making workshop hosted by community member Skanaiè:’a Deer, who uses the activity to help keep Indigenous traditions alive.
