Chuck and the First Peoples' Kitchen

CHUCK'S JOURNEY

Kahnawake

Monday, March 28

Chuck arrives in Kahnawake to visit the community garden. Kanerahtiio and his wife Raven envisioned a garden in which all members of Kahnawake could participate, learn new gardening techniques and pass on traditions. Amongst the many fruits and vegetables, Chuck immediately spots the bright red strawberries, a sacred fruit to the community. They make a Haudenosaunee strawberry drink, corn mush, a type of oatmeal dessert and strawberry cornbread. Chuck doesn’t want to leave Kahnawake without meeting Steve Silverbear McComber, a traditional seed keeper that has been planting corn for the past forty five years.
